I had been reading Vince DelMonte's articles for some time, and I like his “no-nonsense” style of delivering information.  As I went through the entire system, I developed a complete appreciation for his holistic approach for anybody that wants to know how to build muscle (not just skinny guys) and the completeness of the No-Nonsense Muscle Building package.  In short, Vince DelMonte has done an outstanding job in putting together this highly recommended

Vince DelMonte starts the book with the most common mistakes a trainee can make.  Guess what #1 is?  Not having a goal!  The primary audience for the No-Nonsense Muscle Buildinghow to build muscle.  Secondarily, there is great information on how to loose body fat as well.  The individual who is training for sports performance can greatly benefit from this program too.  Along with building a bigger, stronger body, the trainee is given a dedicated chapter to injury prevention that should be required reading for everybody.

Is there balance to the program?

Does it include the principles of recovery?
Very well done!  Recovery gets a chapter of its own and breaks it down into individual components.  Simply put, weightlifting routines break down muscle and muscle building happens during the recovery phase.   So what are the important factors to influence recovery, and how do you make the most of your recovery period?  In No-Nonsense Muscle Building, Vince lists out the important factors; time, nutrition, supplements, drugs, sleep, and stress management.  He also covers each of these factors in enough depth to know how it works and what you should do to maximize their effectiveness.  One of the things I really like is that Vince also gives very sound and easy-to-use methods of knowing when you are not fully recovered, as well as what to do next.  Well done Vince!

Is it easy to follow?
Indeed it is!  One of the biggest advantages to the listing format Vince uses is that it is very easy to go back to information as a reference.  Once again, the No-Nonsense Muscle Building program is written so that anybody can understand the information.  Vince doesn’t stop here; he goes the extra mile to take any guesswork out of laying out the program.   You don’t have to worry about “what do I do next?”

Are the supplement principles sound?
If you think supplements are the be all/end all for muscle gain and fat loss, get ready to save lots of money.  While muscle building supplements have their place and can be helpful, Vince very plainly covers which supplements work and how to use them.  His overall philosophy is that you can gain muscle without supplements, and encourages you to learn how to use whole foods effectively before starting down the supplement path.  In my experience, by learning how to eat and train properly without supplements first, you multiply the effectiveness of supplements when you start using them. 

Does it support the mental side of training?
The No-Nonsense Muscle Building program starts by addressing some of the key points of the mental side of training.  Such key aspects discussed are goal setting, how you talk to yourself (inner dialogue), performance vs. outcome, commitment, deadlines, preparation, etc.  While Vince does a great job looking at the mental side of training from the perspective of the big picture (which is VERY important), I would like to see some emphasis placed on visualization during training as well.  Personally, I have used visualization techniques throughout my training career with great success.  I believe that everybody can benefit from learning how to picture every rep, including how the weight feels, of every heavy set.

So, what is the conclusion of No-Nonsense Muscle Building as it stacks up with our evaluation criteria?  Outstanding!  Personally, I have not been a fitness model nor have known any through the years, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  It’s obvious that Vince is not only very well educated, but he also has extensive practical experience thus providing a real-world knowledge base of what works and what doesn’t.
